Where Does the River Flow?
The Blackmore River starts at a place called Wild Horse Plain. It begins at an elevation of about 21 metres (69 ft) above sea level.
The river flows north, passing by an area known as Tumbling Waters. It also travels through the Blackmore River Conservation Reserve. Finally, the river empties into Darwin Harbour.
The Blackmore River and the nearby Elizabeth River together drain a large area of land. The Blackmore River alone drains about 848 square kilometres (327 sq mi) of land.
Where the river meets the sea, it forms an estuary. This part of the river is affected by the ocean's tides. It is also in a very clean and natural condition.
What's the Weather Like?
The area around the Blackmore River has a special kind of tropical climate. It has two main seasons: the Dry season and the Wet season.
The Dry season lasts for six months, from April to September. During this time, there isn't much rain, with only about 24 mm on average each month.
The Wet season runs from October to March. This is when most of the rain falls, especially between December and April. On average, about 254 mm of rain falls each month during the Wet season.
The river's water flow is highest in February. After that, it slowly decreases. By July, there is usually no fresh water flowing into Darwin Harbour until the next Wet season begins.
How Clean is the Water?
Experts from the Northern Territory Government check the water quality of the Blackmore River. In 2011, they found that the water in the upper estuary and freshwater parts of the river was in good condition.
What is the Land Made Of?
The ground beneath the Blackmore River is mostly made up of two types of rock. These are called Permian siltstones and sandstones.
