The Blackwater River is a small river in Aroostook County, Maine, in the United States. It is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) long. This river is an important part of the natural water system in northern Maine.

Exploring the Blackwater River

The Blackwater River gets its name from the dark color of its water. This color often comes from the natural materials in the soil and plants around the river. It flows through quiet, natural areas in Maine.

Where Does It Start and End?

The Blackwater River begins when two smaller streams join together. These are called the North Branch and the South Branch. This meeting point is in a place called Squa Pan Township.

From there, the river flows west. It travels through the landscape until it reaches another stream called St. Croix Stream. This is where the Blackwater River ends its journey.

A Journey to the Sea

Even though the Blackwater River is not very long, its water travels a much longer distance. After joining the St. Croix Stream, its water then flows into the Aroostook River. The Aroostook River is a larger river that carries the water even further.

Finally, the Aroostook River flows into the mighty Saint John River. The Saint John River is a very big river that eventually empties into the Bay of Fundy on the Atlantic Ocean. This means the water from the small Blackwater River eventually reaches the sea!
