Early Life and Family
Blair Cunningham grew up in a large family. His parents were Kelly Cunningham Sr. and Ernestine Cunningham. Blair was the youngest of 13 children, with 10 older brothers and 3 sisters.
Learning to Play Drums
Blair's oldest brother, Kelly Cunningham Jr., was a big influence on him. Kelly Jr. taught all of his brothers how to play the drums. This early teaching helped Blair develop his drumming skills.
A Family of Musicians
Another one of Blair's brothers, Carl Cunningham, was also a drummer. Carl played with a famous group called the Bar-Kays, who were part of the Stax music label. Sadly, Carl passed away in December 1967 in a plane crash. This was the same accident that also took the life of the famous singer Otis Redding. Blair was only 10 years old at the time.
