Blair McClenachan (1734 – May 8, 1812) was an important merchant and politician. He was born in Ireland and later moved to America. McClenachan served in the United States House of Representatives. He also served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Blair McClenachan was born in the Kingdom of Ireland in 1734. He moved to the United States when he was young. He settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. People described him as a successful trader, banker, and shipowner.

During the American Revolutionary War, McClenachan was very active. He helped start the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry. He also served with this group. In 1780, the Continental Congress needed money for the army. McClenachan was one of the biggest donors to this effort.

His Political Career

McClenachan was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. This was an early political party in the United States. From 1790 to 1795, he served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This is a group of lawmakers for the state of Pennsylvania.

In 1796, he won an election to the 5th United States Congress. He represented Pennsylvania's 2nd congressional district. He served one term in Congress, from 1797 to 1799. After his time in Congress, McClenachan faced some financial difficulties.

Family and Later Life

Blair McClenachan had six children. In 1781, his daughter Deborah got married. She married Colonel Walter Stewart. Colonel Stewart was an important military leader. He later became a Major General in the Pennsylvania Militia.

Blair McClenachan passed away on May 8, 1812. He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried in a vault at St. Paul's Cemetery.
