The Rivière Blanche is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Portneuf River. This river runs through several towns. These include Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier, Pont-Rouge, and Saint-Basile.
The Rivière Blanche mostly flows between farms and forests. These areas are important for the local economy. You can find the river by following roads like chemin du Rang Sainte-Madeleine. Other roads include chemin du 2e rang du Brûlé and rue Lamothe.
The river's surface usually freezes from early December to late March. It's safest to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The water level changes with the seasons. It also changes depending on how much rain falls. The river's biggest flood usually happens in March or April.
Where the River Starts and Ends
The Blanche River begins at a lake called Lac Blanc. This lake is in the northwest part of Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier. The river's starting point is about 0.75 km southwest of a mountain peak. This peak is 355 meters (1,165 feet) high.
Lac Blanc is also about 2.24 km (1.39 miles) southeast of Sergent Lake. It's 6.6 km (4.1 miles) southwest of Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier village. The river's source is 13.2 km (8.2 miles) northeast of Saint-Basile.
The River's Journey
The Blanche River flows for about 7.9 km (4.9 miles). During its journey, the river drops 224 meters (735 feet) in elevation.
- For the first 2.1 km (1.3 miles), it flows southeast through forests. It then turns south. Here, it meets the water from Lac Linteau. This area is near the small community of Lac André.
- For the next 5.8 km (3.6 miles), the river flows southwest. It follows the base of a mountain. Then it crosses a small flat area. Part of this section forms the border between Pont-Rouge and Saint-Basile.
The Blanche River joins the Portneuf River on its northeast side. This meeting point is about 6.8 km (4.2 miles) northwest of Pont-Rouge village. It's also 16.3 km (10.1 miles) north of where the Portneuf River meets the St. Lawrence River.
After the Blanche River joins the Portneuf River, the water continues to flow. It travels about 21.9 km (13.6 miles) down the Portneuf River. The Portneuf River winds southwest through the St. Lawrence plain. Finally, it reaches the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.
