Blatcherism is a special word made by combining the names of two important British politicians: Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher. Tony Blair was the leader of the Labour Party, and Margaret Thatcher led the Conservative Party.

This term is used by people who felt that when Tony Blair became Prime Minister, his government started using many of the same ideas and policies that Margaret Thatcher's government had used before him. It's like saying their political approaches became quite similar, even though they were from different parties.

The word "Blatcherism" is similar to an older term called "Butskellism". That word described how two different parties in the past agreed on many economic ideas after World War II.

The term "Blatcherism" might have first appeared in a magazine called Red Pepper before Tony Blair won the election in 1997. It was also used by a Canadian writer named Brian Lee Crowley in 2001.

What is Blatcherism?

Blatcherism describes a way of governing that focuses on certain key ideas. These ideas include:

  • Supporting a free market: This means letting businesses operate with less government control.
  • Privatization: This is when services that used to be run by the government (like some parts of public transport or utilities) are sold to private companies.
  • A specific economic policy: This policy often involves controlling how much money is in circulation and how much the government spends.
  • Laws that limit the power of trade unions: These are groups that represent workers.

These kinds of policies became more common for both the Labour and Conservative parties. This started happening when Tony Blair became the leader of the Labour Party in July 1994. After he took charge, the Labour Party changed many of its old policies. It began to accept some of the things Margaret Thatcher had done when she was Prime Minister.

Tony Blair, along with other key figures like Peter Mandelson, Gordon Brown, and Alastair Campbell, created a new vision for the Labour Party called "New Labour". This new approach included many ideas from Thatcher's time, which they called the "Third Way". It was a way of trying to find a middle ground between traditional socialist ideas and free-market capitalism.
