Blauwe Theehuis facts for kids
The Blauwe Theehuis, which means "Blue Tea House," is a super cool building in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands. It was built in the 1930s and looks a bit like a flying saucer!
This unique building is shaped like a ring. It started as a tea house, but now it's a busy café and restaurant. You can also find theatre shows, festivals, and even weddings happening here. It's so special that it's considered a rijksmonument, which means it's a national monument in the Netherlands.
The Blauwe Theehuis is made from strong materials like concrete, steel, and glass. It has two round floors stacked on top of each other. The roof is also circular, making it look like a third "saucer." The bottom floor has eight sides, and the top floor has twelve sides. There's an outside staircase to reach the top floor. The edges of the roof, the railings, and the twelve pillars holding up the top floor are all painted a bright blue!
History of the Blue Tea House
The Blauwe Theehuis was built in 1937. This happened after the old tea house on the same spot sadly burned down in the summer of 1936.
Who Designed It?
Two brothers, H.A.J. Baanders and Jan Baanders, designed this amazing building. They created it in a style called Modernist or Nieuwe Bouwen. This was a Dutch version of a famous design style known as Bauhaus.
What Happened Next?
In 1998, new owners bought the building. They decided to open up the top floor to the restaurant, giving visitors even more space to enjoy. Later, in 2019, a company called Brouwerij 't IJ took over the building.
