What's in a Name? The Story of Blawnox

The name Blawnox comes from a company called Blaw-Knox. This company had a large factory in the area. It provided many jobs for the people living there. Before it was called Blawnox, the town had a different name: Hoboken.

Blawnox History: From Hoboken to Today

The town of Blawnox started in the late 1800s. Back then, it was known as Hoboken. The main industry in the area was steel. Two important companies were the Blaw Steel Co. and the Knox Welded and Pressed Steel Co.

In 1917, the Blaw Steel Co. bought the Knox Welded and Pressed Steel Co. Together, they became the Blaw-Knox Steel Construction Co. This new, larger company covered a bigger area. Because of this, the town of Hoboken also grew to include the entire factory area.

Blawnox officially became a borough on April 13, 1925. It was formed out of a larger area called O'Hara Township.
