About Blessed Sacrament Church
The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, along with its priory (where the priests live) and its school building, is very important. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means they are recognized as historic places in the United States.
History and Buildings
The church has a long history. It was founded on December 6, 1908. The main church building was dedicated on October 4, 1925. It is built in a Neo-gothic style, which means it looks like old European cathedrals.
The priory, where the Dominican priests live, was finished in 1922. It was designed by an architect named Arnold Constable.
The original school building was completed in 1913. It was a two-story wooden building. Later, in 1948, this building was found to have problems and needed to be replaced. A new school building was built in 1950.
Earthquake Repairs
In 2001, the church buildings were damaged by the 2001 Nisqually earthquake. This earthquake caused a lot of shaking in the area. Because of the damage, the church needed major repairs. These repairs were completed in 2010, making the church safe and strong again.
Helping University Students
The Church of the Blessed Sacrament also helps students at the University of Washington. It does this through the Prince of Peace Newman Center. A Newman Center is a place that supports Catholic students at universities.
The Prince of Peace Newman Center is very old. It is the fifth-oldest Newman Center ever created. It was also the first one to be run by the Dominican Order. Priests from the church serve as chaplains, helping students with their faith.
Student Brothers Program
The church has a special program for young men studying to become Dominican priests, called "seminarians." These seminarians serve as "student brothers" for one year. They work with the church's pastor and the Newman Center chaplains. Their job is to teach about the Catholic faith to different groups of people.
FOCUS Missionaries
Since 2019, missionaries from a group called FOCUS have also been working with the church. They help with programs for the parish and the Newman Center. Their goal is to share the Catholic faith with university students.
