View of Blimea

Blimea is a special area, or "parish," located in the eastern part of the San Martín del Rey Aurelio council in Asturias, Spain. Think of a parish like a neighborhood or a small district within a larger town. In December 2007, Blimea joined two other towns, El Entrego and Sotrondio, to form the bigger town of San Martín. Now, Blimea is one of the important districts within this larger town.

What is Blimea?

Blimea is known for its beautiful natural surroundings. It's a place where the Nalón River flows through, splitting the area into two big halves. This river has helped create a wide, flat area, which is where the main part of Blimea is located. The parish covers about 9.66 square kilometers (or 3.73 square miles). In 2005, around 3,867 people lived there.

Where does the name Blimea come from?

The name "Blimea" has an interesting history! It comes from several old Asturian words that all mean "wicker." Wicker is a type of flexible plant material often used to make baskets or furniture. Some of these old words include bima, blima, brima, blimba, or bilma.

The word "wicker" itself comes from a Latin word, "vimen-viminis." In Asturian, the name might also be connected to words like belime, which means "wheat residue," or bilimia, meaning "drill" or "Beria." So, it's likely that Blimea was a place where a lot of blima (wicker plants) grew a long time ago.
