Sotrondio is a town located in San Martín del Rey Aurelio, Asturias, a region in northern Spain. It is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) away from Oviedo, a major city in Asturias.
In September 2007, Sotrondio became part of a larger area. The government of Asturias decided to join Sotrondio with two nearby towns, El Entrego and Blimea. Together, they formed one bigger community called San Martín del Rey. This made them all part of the same local government area.
About Sotrondio
Sotrondio is crossed by the Nalón River. This river actually divides the town, with the Serallo neighborhood on one side and the rest of Sotrondio on the other.
In 2009, Sotrondio had a population of 3,849 people. This number was lower than in previous years. The reason for this was a big change in the local industries. The area used to rely a lot on coal mining. When the coal mines faced difficulties, many jobs were lost. This led to fewer people living in the town.
Historical Connections
Sotrondio has some interesting historical links. It is believed that Aurelius of Asturias, who was a king of Asturias a very long time ago, might be buried near Sotrondio. His resting place is thought to be at the Iglesia de San Martín de Tours.
This church is the local parish church for the area. It was rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War by a company called Duro Felguera.
Important Places
One of the notable buildings in Sotrondio is the Teatro Virginia. This theater is located in a public space called Plaza de Ramón y Cajal. It serves as a cultural spot for the community.
