James Lee Baker (born May 19, 1996), known as BlocBoy JB, is an American rapper. He is from Memphis, Tennessee. He is famous for his 2018 song "Look Alive". This song featured the artist Drake. It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also released his mixtape Simi in 2018. BlocBoy JB later signed with Interscope Records.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

James Baker was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 19, 1996. He started making music when he was fourteen years old. He moved to Raleigh in North Memphis. There, he met Tay Keith, who later became a music producer. They began making music together.

Music Career

Early Songs (2012–2016)

BlocBoy JB started sharing his music online in 2012. He posted songs on his SoundCloud page. In 2016, he released his first mixtape called Who Am I. One song from this mixtape, "No Chorus Pt. 6", became very popular. It got over three million views on YouTube.

Rise to Fame (2017–2018)

In 2017, BlocBoy JB released the song "Shoot". This song led to a popular dance craze called the "shoot dance". Another single, "Rover", came out in early 2018. These popular songs caught the attention of Canadian rapper Drake.

Drake and BlocBoy JB worked together on a song. This song was called "Look Alive". It was released in February 2018. The song quickly became a hit. It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

After "Look Alive" came out, BlocBoy JB released "Rover 2.0". This was a new version of "Rover". It featured rapper 21 Savage. This song also did well on the Billboard charts. BlocBoy JB was also featured on songs by other artists. These included ASAP Rocky and Moneybagg Yo.

BlocBoy JB released his eighth mixtape, I Am Me, in June 2019. This mixtape featured artists like Lil Durk and Moneybagg Yo. He has also worked with fellow Memphis rapper NLE Choppa on several songs.

In March 2020, he released "Swervin". In May 2020, he released "No Chorus, Pt. 12". This song was produced by his longtime friend Tay Keith. BlocBoy JB's first official studio album, FatBoy, was released on October 9, 2020.
