Block Island Sound is a part of the big Atlantic Ocean. It's like a wide water passage, or a strait, that separates Block Island from the coast of Rhode Island in the United States. This watery area is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) wide.

Where is Block Island Sound Located?

This important body of water stretches out between different land areas. To the west, it reaches all the way to Montauk Point. This point is on the eastern tip of Long Island in New York. The sound also touches other islands in New York, like Plum Island, Gardiners Island, and Fishers Island.

Connecting Waterways

Block Island Sound is a key link between other water bodies. On its western side, it connects to Long Island Sound. To the east, it joins up with Rhode Island Sound. These connections make it an important pathway for boats and ships.

Why is Block Island Sound Important?

This sound is more than just a stretch of water. It's a vital part of the Intracoastal Waterway. This is a network of natural and man-made channels that allows boats to travel along the Atlantic coast.

Naval History

The Block Island Sound has even been honored by the United States Navy. Three different warships have been named after this sound. One example is the USS Block Island. This shows how important this body of water has been throughout history.
