Exploring Blocksburg's History
How Blocksburg Got Its Name
Blocksburg has had a few different names over the years. Some of its past names include Larrabee, Blocksburgh, Blockburger's, and Powellville. The name Blocksburgh was first used when a post office opened there in 1877. Later, in 1893, the name was officially changed to Blocksburg. It was named after Benjamin Blockburger, who was an important local merchant in the area.
What Blocksburg Used to Be Like
In its early days, Blocksburg was a busy little town. It had many different businesses that served the people living there and travelers passing through. You could find hotels and saloons in the community. There were also offices for doctors and dentists. Blocksburg offered a variety of other services and shops too.
Why Blocksburg Changed Over Time
Blocksburg's importance as a busy center began to decline after 1920. This happened when the Redwood Highway was completed. The new highway was built to bypass Blocksburg. This meant that travelers and businesses no longer passed directly through the community. As a result, many of the businesses that once thrived there eventually closed down.
