What is Bloodsworth Island?
A Former Military Training Area
From 1942 to 1995, the United States Navy used Bloodsworth Island for training. It was a place where ships and planes practiced firing weapons. They dropped bombs and shot bullets, rockets, and missiles. These weapons contained explosives and other powerful materials.
Because of all the training, many unexploded weapons were left behind. These are called unexploded ordnance. They are very dangerous. This is why no one is allowed to visit Bloodsworth Island today. It is kept off-limits to keep people safe.
