Bloodsworth Island is an island located in the Chesapeake Bay. You can find it in the southern part of Dorchester County, Maryland. Long ago, people lived and worked on the northern part of the island. They were likely involved in the important oyster fishing business of the Chesapeake Bay during the 1800s.

What is Bloodsworth Island?

A Former Military Training Area

From 1942 to 1995, the United States Navy used Bloodsworth Island for training. It was a place where ships and planes practiced firing weapons. They dropped bombs and shot bullets, rockets, and missiles. These weapons contained explosives and other powerful materials.

Because of all the training, many unexploded weapons were left behind. These are called unexploded ordnance. They are very dangerous. This is why no one is allowed to visit Bloodsworth Island today. It is kept off-limits to keep people safe.

Bloodsworth Island in Pop Culture

As Seen on TV

Bloodsworth Island has even appeared in a popular TV show! In an episode of The Walking Dead, a character named Virgil says he comes from a group living on Bloodsworth Island. He tries to go back there. Another character, Michonne (Danai Gurira), goes with him. They hope to find important supplies on the island to help them survive.
