Bloomer's Early History

The first official survey of the Bloomer area happened in July 1847. This survey was done by a team working for the U.S. government. They measured the land into 6-mile squares.

In September 1852, other teams came to mark all the corners of these land sections. They walked through forests and swamps. They used special tools like a chain and a compass to measure everything.

After they finished, the surveyor wrote down what the western six miles of the area were like. He said there was a lot of good timber, like pine, oak, and sugar maple trees. The land was mostly hilly, except for a few small swampy areas. The soil was light, with a thin layer of leaf mold and a rocky or gravelly layer underneath. He also noted that two small creeks started in this area and flowed south.
