A Look at Bluff Dale's History

Bluff Dale was first called Bluff Springs by the early settlers who moved there. The name changed to Bluff Dale when a post office was opened in 1877.

How Bluff Dale Grew

In 1889, the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway was built through the area. A man named Jack Glenn gave land for a town to be built around the railway. Bluff Dale officially became an incorporated town in 1908.

By 1915, the town had grown to include a bank and even its own newspaper! The number of people living in Bluff Dale changed over the years. In 1936, there were 680 residents. By 1989, about 300 people lived there.

In 1989, Bluff Dale had a Garden Club, three churches, and a volunteer fire department. It also had a committee focused on making the town look nice. Around 2002, a gas station and convenience store opened. A bank was also opened around 2005.

Public schools in Bluff Dale spend about $6,770 per student each year. This is a bit more than the average school spending in the rest of the U.S., which is about $6,058. There are usually about 11 students for every teacher in Bluff Dale. This means students might get more individual attention.

Important Historical Markers

Bluff Dale has several historical markers that tell stories about its past.

Bluff Dale Suspension Bridge

This iron bridge was opened in 1891 and crosses the Paluxy River. Even though its historical marker calls it a suspension bridge, it's actually a cable stayed bridge. It might even be the oldest bridge of its kind in the United States! You can find it on Berry Creek Road (CR-149), a quarter mile north of US-377.

Bluff Dale Tabernacle

The Bluff Dale Tabernacle was built in 1906. The land for it was given by Andrew Glenn. This building has been used for many community events over the years. It has hosted funerals, school graduations, and was originally used for religious meetings that sometimes lasted for days. It was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1982. You can find it at Glenn Street and Holmes Street.

Old Public Water Well

This well was dug around 1887. In the early days, it provided water for travelers and cattle herds. The Fort Worth Rio Grande Railroad dug the well mainly to supply water for their trains. Amazingly, it is still used today! This well was recognized by the State Historical Survey Committee in 1971. It is located on Greenwood Street.

Climate

Bluff Dale has a climate with warm temperatures and rain spread out throughout the year. The Köppen Climate System describes it as a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters.
