A Town Under the Water
Bluffton has a very interesting history. The original town site of Bluffton is now completely covered by the waters of Lake Buchanan.
This happened when the Buchanan Dam was finished in 1939. The dam was built to create the lake, which then flooded the area where the first town of Bluffton stood.
Because of the rising water, the entire town had to be moved. Starting in 1931, people began relocating their homes and businesses several miles to the west. This meant leaving behind their ranches and valuable pecan trees.
Old Bluffton Reappears
In 2011, a very serious drought hit the area. This caused the water levels in Lake Buchanan to drop a lot.
When the lake got very low, the old town site of Bluffton became visible again. People could see the foundations of buildings and other parts of the original town that had been underwater for decades. It was like a hidden ghost town reappearing!
