Blum Creek: A Mountain Stream

Blum Creek is a cool, clear stream located in the beautiful Washington state. It's not a very long stream, but it plays an important role in the local environment. This creek is known for its connection to glaciers and for being a home to amazing wildlife.

Where Does Blum Creek Start?

Blum Creek begins high up in the mountains. Its water comes from two main sources: the Hagan Glacier and another glacier that doesn't have a specific name. Both of these glaciers are found on the north side of Mount Blum. The creek also gets water from the Blum Lakes. These are a group of six lakes located south of Bacon Peak.

The Journey of Blum Creek

From its icy beginnings, Blum Creek flows for about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers). It travels through the mountain landscape until it reaches its end point, joining the larger Baker River. The creek meets the Baker River a little further downstream from another glacier-fed stream called Sulphide Creek.

One of the most exciting parts of Blum Creek's journey is when it creates a stunning waterfall. This waterfall is called Blum Basin Falls. Here, the creek tumbles down a very steep glacial cliff. The water drops an impressive 1,680 feet (512 meters)!

Home for Mountain Goats

The area around Blum Creek is more than just a beautiful landscape. It's also a very important place for animals. The entire area that collects water for Blum Creek, called its watershed, is a special spot for mountain goats. These amazing animals, known as Rocky mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus), spend their winters here. It's a safe place for them to find food and shelter during the colder months.
