History of the Club
The Bo'ness Football Club believed it started in 1881. However, some records show a Bo'ness team as early as 1878. The first known games were in late 1881 against the Grasshoppers club's second team.
In 1886, the club moved to its famous home, Newtown Park. They played their first game there against Dumbarton F.C., losing 4-0.
Bo'ness joined the Eastern Football Alliance in 1891, but that league did not finish its first season. After winning the East of Scotland Shield in 1895, Bo'ness started playing in leagues again in 1901. They joined the Central Football Combination and later the Central Football League.
In 1921, Bo'ness joined the bigger Scottish Football League Second Division. After five years of finishing in the middle of the league, the club won the Second Division championship in 1927. This win meant they moved up to the top league, the First Division.
The team only stayed in the First Division for one season before moving back down. After this, Bo'ness faced money problems. Many clubs in the area struggled because the local coal and oil industries were slowing down. Bo'ness even let unemployed people watch games for free after 30 minutes.
In 1931, the club found it hard to pay the £50 fee needed for visiting teams. Even so, they were allowed to stay in the league. But in October 1932, they could not pay Stenhousemuir F.C. and Brechin City F.C.. Because of this, the club was removed from the League. People said this happened because of "industrial depression" and "dog racing" in nearby towns. At that time, the club owed about £500. All their game results for that season were removed.
Bo'ness kept playing as a non-league team until 1939. They played in leagues like the Scottish Football Alliance and the East of Scotland Football League. A future Scotland player, Alex Munro, played for Bo'ness during this time. The club continued through World War II. In 1945, it joined with a local team called Bo'ness Cadora. Together, they formed a new junior club, Bo'ness United.
