Robert Lee Atkins, Jr. (born April 2, 1946 – died September 22, 2020) was an American professional football player. He played as a defensive back in the National Football League (NFL). Bob Atkins played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Oilers. He was also a respected coach and community leader.

Atkins was born in Modesto, California. When he was three, his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. He was a talented athlete in high school. He played baseball, basketball, and football. After graduating in 1964, he went to Grambling State University. He later earned a master's degree from Prairie View A&M University.

Bob Atkins' Football Career

In 1968, the St. Louis Cardinals picked Atkins in the second round of the NFL draft. He was a cornerback. Before playing professionally, he played in two big all-star games. These included the Senior Bowl and the College All-Star Game. In the College All-Star Game, he played against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers were the NFL champions at the time.

As a new player with the Cardinals, Atkins was known for his amazing speed. He was also known for his strong hits on the field. He played two years for the Cardinals. In 1970, he was traded to the Houston Oilers.

Playing for the Houston Oilers

Atkins played for the Oilers for seven years. During this time, he was respected both on and off the field. He often won "game balls" for his excellent performances. These achievements were often talked about in the news. He retired from the Houston Oilers in 1976. After football, Atkins looked for new opportunities.

Life After the NFL

After his playing career, Bob Atkins became a coach. In 1983, he coached women's basketball and was an assistant football coach. He worked at Sam Houston High School in Houston, Texas.

In 1984, Atkins took on important roles at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). He was an assistant football coach and head women's basketball coach. He held these positions for many years. In 2005, he became the Director of Athletic Operations at PVAMU. He retired from the university in August 2011.

Community Work and Awards

Bob Atkins was also recognized for his volunteer work. He helped the Professional United Leadership League (PULL). He worked with teenagers in inner-city Houston for seven years. He was like a big brother and counselor to them.

He received the "L. J. Price School Athletic Alumni Award" in 2009. This award was given in Atlanta, Georgia. He was also praised for sharing his knowledge at state and national events. Atkins was a member of the NFL Association. In 2017, he was inducted into the Grambling Legends Hall of Fame.

Bob Atkins passed away on September 22, 2020. He was 74 years old. He had a son, Christopher, and four grandchildren.
