Bob Griffith was born in Liberty, Tennessee, on October 1, 1912. He grew up to be a very tall and strong baseball player. He was 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 235 pounds! Because of his size, he was sometimes called 'Big Bill'. He also had another nickname, 'Schoolboy'. Bob was a right-handed pitcher, meaning he threw the ball with his right arm. He also batted right-handed.

Playing in the Negro Leagues

Bob Griffith started his professional baseball career in 1934. His first team was the Nashville Elite Giants. The Negro Leagues were special baseball leagues. They allowed African American players to play professionally. This was important during a time when they could not play in Major League Baseball.
