Robert Lee Trice (born August 28, 1926 – died September 16, 1988) was an American baseball pitcher. He played for the Philadelphia and Kansas City Athletics from 1953 to 1955. Bob was born in Newton, Georgia. He was a right-handed pitcher, standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.
Bob Trice's Baseball Journey
Bob Trice started his professional baseball journey in the Negro leagues. He played for the Homestead Grays from 1948 to 1950. In 1953, he joined the Philadelphia Athletics. Before that, he won 21 games for the Ottawa A's in the International League.
On September 13, 1953, Bob made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut. This was a big moment! He became the very first black player in the history of the Athletics team. He played in three games that season. He won two games and lost one. His first start was a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Browns. But then he won his next two games against the Washington Senators.
Highlight Games
One of Bob's best games in the major leagues was on April 24, 1954. He pitched a complete game shutout against the New York Yankees. A shutout means the other team scored zero runs! He did this in front of nearly 5,000 fans at home.
