Newton is a small city in Baker County, Georgia, United States. In 2020, about 602 people lived there. Newton is also the "county seat" of Baker County. This means it's where the main government offices for the county are located.

A Look Back in Time
Newton was started in 1837. In the same year, it became the main town for Baker County, taking over from a place called Byron. There are a few important historical spots in Newton that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Baker County Courthouse (Georgia), the Notchaway Baptist Church and Cemetery, and the Pine Bloom Plantation.

Newton is located in the southwestern part of Georgia. Its exact location is 31 degrees North and 84 degrees West. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 7.8 square kilometers (or 2.28 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

The population of Newton has changed over the years. In 2000, there were 851 people living in the city. By 2010, the number went down to 654. In the most recent count in 2020, the population was 602.
Learning in Newton
Newton has one main school building for all students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This building is part of the Baker County School System. It's called Baker County Elementary/Middle School and opened in 2001.
Before that, students went to an older school building near the courthouse. This old building was built in the late 1960s and was once called East Baker School. It now houses the East Baker Historical Society.
For many years, high school students from Newton had to travel to Camilla for school. But starting in the 2007–2008 school year, high school classes returned to Newton. The old building that used to be the high school is now used as a Headstart Center for younger children. A new gym for the Baker County Schools was finished in 2009.
