Bobby Day (born Robert James Byrd, July 1, 1930 – July 27, 1990) was an American singer, musician, and songwriter. He was a talented artist who played many instruments. Bobby Day is best known for his super hit song, "Rockin' Robin". This famous song was written by Leon René, who used the name Jimmie Thomas.
About Bobby Day
Bobby Day was born in Fort Worth, Texas. When he was 15, he moved to Los Angeles, California. His first song, "Young Girl," was recorded in 1949. He sang with a group called The Hollywood Flames. This song came out in 1950.
For several years, Bobby Day had only small successes in music. These were mostly on the West Coast. He recorded music using many different names. Some of these names were The Jets, The Voices, and The Sounds. He was also the first "Bob" in the duo Bob & Earl.
When he was part of The Flames, he used the name Bobby Day. He wrote a song called "Buzz Buzz Buzz." This song became the group's first and biggest hit. In 1957, Bobby Day started his own band called the Satellites. After that, he recorded three songs that are now seen as classic rock and roll tunes.
His Hit Songs
Bobby Day wrote many popular songs. "Over and Over" was one of them. The Dave Clark Five made it very popular in 1965. He also wrote "Little Bitty Pretty One". This song was a hit for Thurston Harris in 1957. Later, Frankie Lymon, Clyde McPhatter, and the Jackson Five also sang it.
But Bobby Day is most famous for his own song, "Rockin' Robin." He recorded it by himself in 1958. This song became a huge hit, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over one million copies! Because of this, he received a gold record.
Many other artists have sung "Rockin' Robin." These include Bob Luman, The Hollies, Gene Vincent, and Michael Jackson. Even McFly sang it in 2006.
In 2012 and 2013, one of his songs was used in a TV commercial. The song was "Beep-Beep-Beep." It was used for a Kia Sorento car ad across the U.S.
Later Life
Bobby Day passed away on July 27, 1990. He was 60 years old. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
