Robert F. "Bobby" Lewis was an American college basketball player. He was born on July 25, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bobby was known for his exciting dribbling, passing, and play-making skills. He was a very talented player from a young age. He learned many moves from his mentor, Guy Rodgers, who is a famous basketball player. Bobby Lewis passed away on September 19, 2024, when he was 78 years old.
Bobby Lewis's Early Life and Sports
Before playing basketball, Bobby Lewis was great at other sports. He was good at table tennis and baseball. In 1960, he became the City of Philadelphia table tennis champion. This earned him an invitation to the Youth Table Tennis National Championships in New York.
That same year, Bobby was part of a special "Salute to Youth" program. In 1963, he played on a City Championship Baseball team. The next year, he was chosen for the All-City Basketball Team. He was also named an Eastern Region High School Basketball All-American. Another famous player, Lew Alcindor, was also on this list.
College Basketball Career
Bobby Lewis became well-known across the country while playing basketball. He played for South Carolina State College. This college is located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. His coach was Ed Martin, who is now in the Hall of Fame.
In his first year, Bobby scored 12 points per game. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.9 points. In his junior year, he greatly improved, scoring 19.1 points per game. In 1967, Bobby was team captain for the second time. He led his team to the NCAA Division II Regional Finals.
That same year, Bobby was chosen for the United States team. He was the team captain and flag bearer for the FIBA Small Player's World Cup Games. His team won the gold medal! The team was coached by another Hall of Famer, John McClendon.
In his senior year, Bobby had an amazing season. He scored 30.9 points and made 11.8 assists per game. He was the 8th highest scorer in the NCAA. Because of his great performance, he was named a First-Team All-American for small colleges by UPI.
The "2 Ball Drill" Originator
Bobby Lewis is known for creating the "2 Ball Drill." This drill helps basketball players improve their dribbling skills. It involves dribbling two basketballs at the same time. This helps players get better control and coordination.
