Bobi (born May 11, 1992 – died October 21, 2023) was a special dog from Portugal. He was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a type of dog known for guarding farms. Bobi lived with the Costa family in a village called Conqueiros.
On February 2, 2023, Bobi became famous. He was confirmed as the first dog ever to live to be 30 years old! This made him the oldest dog in history whose age could be officially checked. On May 11, 2023, Bobi even celebrated his 31st birthday.
Becoming the Oldest Dog
Bobi's age was officially recorded. It was listed in Portugal's government pet database. Also, Guinness World Records checked and confirmed his age.
Bobi was born with three brothers. They were born in a small building where wood was kept. Bobi was lucky because he blended in with the wood. This helped him avoid being taken away.
Guinness World Records announced Bobi as the oldest dog. He was 30 years and 266 days old on February 1, 2023. He broke a record that had stood for over 83 years! The previous record holder was a dog named Bluey. Bluey was an Australian Cattle Dog who lived to be 29 years and 5 months old.
Bobi's Long and Happy Life
Bobi's owners said he was quite healthy for his age. He did have some trouble walking. His eyesight also wasn't as good as it used to be. But overall, he had a good life. In 2018, he had a small health scare. He had some difficulty breathing but recovered.
The Costa family believes Bobi lived so long for a few reasons. They think a "calm, peaceful environment" helped him. They also fed him fresh food, not just regular dog kibble. Bobi's long life might also be due to his family. His mother lived to be 18 years old!
To celebrate Bobi's 31st birthday, a big party was held. About 100 guests came to celebrate. They enjoyed eating meat and fish. A group of dancers also performed at the party. Bobi passed away peacefully on October 21, 2023, at the age of 31.
