Discovering Bocan Stone Circle
This amazing stone circle sits on Bocan Hill. It is just outside the village of Culdaff. The area is part of the beautiful Inishowen peninsula. The circle is in a field covered with purple heather.
What Does the Circle Look Like?
The Bocan Stone Circle is quite large. It measures about 18.3 metres across. Imagine a giant ring of stones!
Originally, there were around 30 stones in the circle. Some of these stones were very tall, reaching up to 2 metres high. Today, only seven of these ancient stones are still standing. The others have either fallen over or are broken.
Mysteries of the Stones
Two of the taller stones seem to mark an entrance to the circle. Opposite this entrance are two smaller stones. Experts think the circle might be lined up with the sun or stars. It could point between Slieve Snaght and Jura, Scotland. On a clear day, you can even see Jura in the distance!
In 1816, people found something interesting here. Reports mentioned "graves" with "earthen urns" inside the circle. These were likely ancient burial sites. The urns were pots used to hold the remains of people from long ago. This shows the circle was an important place for ancient communities.
