History of Bodegas Güell
Antoni Gaudí started designing Bodegas Güell in 1882. He was asked to do this by his friend and supporter, Eusebi Güell. Güell was very impressed by Gaudí's work at an exhibition in Paris. Gaudí also designed other famous buildings for Güell, like Palau Güell and Park Güell.
Originally, Gaudí was asked to design a winery and some hunting lodges. However, the hunting lodges were never built. The entire complex was part of the La Cuadra estate, owned by Count Güell. The winery buildings were finally constructed between 1895 and 1897. Gaudí's helper, Francesc Berenguer, helped oversee the building work.
What Does Bodegas Güell Look Like?
The winery has a distinct triangular shape at the front. Its roofs are very steep and made of stone slabs. You can see sets of chimneys on top. There are also two doors that connect the winery to an older building.
The building has three main levels:
- The ground floor was used for parking vehicles.
- The first floor had an apartment.
- The top floor featured a chapel with a domed roof.
The Wine Production Story
Count Güell actually made wine at Bodegas Güell. This wine was served on ships belonging to the Compañía Transatlántica Española shipping line. It was also sent to places like Cuba. However, making wine at Bodegas Güell stopped in 1936. This was because the wine did not become very popular.
Today, Bodegas Güell is no longer a winery. Instead, it houses a restaurant.
