History of Bogart
How Bogart Got Its Name
The town of Bogart was first named Osceola. This name honored a very important Creek and Seminole leader named Osceola. However, in 1892, people found out there was another town in Georgia also called Osceola.
So, the town was renamed Bogart. This new name honored a respected railroad agent who worked in the area.
Bogart's Changing Location
Over time, Bogart has been part of different counties. It was once in Franklin County, then Jackson County. Today, it is mostly in Oconee County, with a small part in Clarke County.
Many of the first settlers came to Bogart during the Georgia Land Lotteries. These lotteries were a way for Georgia to give out land to its citizens.

Life in Bogart really started to grow in the 1890s. This was when a train line was built connecting Athens to Atlanta. The train made it easier for people and goods to travel.
Bogart officially became a city in 1905. It was a busy place with many businesses. These included a bank, a general store (called a mercantile store), a place to stay (a boarding house), a drug store, and a train station. There were also three cotton gins, a post office, blacksmith shops, a school, churches, and gristmills (places to grind grain).
