Bohrmans Mill (Pennsylvania) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bohrman's Mill was an old mill in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It was built way back in 1815! This special mill used the power of water to grind grains. It was located near the town of Orwigsburg, right next to Mahonney Creek. This creek flowed down from a place called Second Mountain. The mill mostly helped turn corn into cornmeal and remove the outer shells from oats.

What Was Bohrman's Mill?

Bohrman's Mill was a type of mill called a gristmill. A gristmill is a place where grains like corn or wheat are ground into flour or meal. Imagine a giant blender powered by water! This mill first used a huge 20-foot water wheel to get its power. Later, it was updated to use a more modern turbine system, which also used water power but in a different way.

Who Owned the Mill?

The first known owner of Bohrman's Mill was George Heebner. Later, a man named Daniel Boyer took care of the mill for many years, from 1865 to 1894. After 1894, the Bohrman family bought the mill and the land around it. They owned and operated it until it finally closed down.

Where is it Now?

Sadly, Bohrman's Mill doesn't exist anymore. Like many old mills in Schuylkill County, it's gone. However, the homes and other buildings that were part of the mill farm are still standing today. The area where the old mill used to be is still known as Bohrman's Mill. Even today, members of the Bohrman family live in Orwigsburg and other parts of Pennsylvania.
