A Look Back: The Kingdom of Boina
How the Kingdom Started
The Kingdom of Boina began around the year 1690. It was founded by King Andriamandisoarivo. He was the son of Lahifotsy, who started the Sakalava Kingdom. Andriamandisoarivo created his own kingdom after a disagreement about who would rule in the north.
The kingdom was centered around Boina Bay. This area is in the north-west part of Madagascar.
Life in Boina
During the 1690s, many European sailors and traders visited the northern coast of Madagascar. Some of them set up bases there. One of King Andrianamboniarivo's main helpers was Tom Similaho. His father was an English sailor and his mother was a Malagasy woman.
The kingdoms of Boina and Menabe grew important in the 1700s. Boina was in the north-west and Menabe was in the west. The king of Boina was seen as very special. People believed he could speak with God and their ancestors. All the land in the kingdom belonged to him.
Even the Antankarana kingdom, located in the far north of the island, paid tribute to Boina. This shows how powerful Boina was.
The End of the Kingdom
After 1832, the Kingdom of Boina was taken over by the Imerina. Imerina was another powerful kingdom in Madagascar. Boina officially became part of Madagascar in 1840. The last ruler of the Kingdom of Boina was Queen Tsiomeko.
