Bois d'Arc (pronounced BOH-dark) is a small, unincorporated community in Butler County, Kansas, United States. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's located about six miles southeast of Augusta in Bloomington Township.
History of Bois d'Arc
The name Bois d'Arc comes from a special tree called the Osage Orange. This tree was very common in the area. The Osage Native American people used the strong wood from these trees to make their bows for hunting and defense.
A post office was opened in Bois d'Arc on December 21, 1892. However, it closed a few years later on March 31, 1904. Over time, the spelling of the town's name changed to "Boder," and then to "Bodarc," which matches how it's pronounced today.
Today, the remaining structures in Bois d'Arc include the building that used to be the post office, a farmhouse, and a historic bridge. You can also find the ruins of an old grist mill nearby.
The Historic Bridge
A special bridge near Bois d'Arc is called the Little Walnut River Pratt Truss Bridge. This bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site that is protected. The bridge crosses Little Walnut Creek. It is located on SW 157th Terrace, between SW Commanche Road and SW Purity Springs Road.
