History
The tower was first called the Olds Tower. It was named after Ransom Eli Olds, a famous person in the car industry. He helped pay for most of the tower's construction. The first stone, called the cornerstone, was placed on November 14, 1929.
Soon after, the tower was renamed the Capital National Bank Tower. This was after the bank that Ransom Eli Olds helped create. In 1954, it became the Michigan National Bank Tower. It kept this name until 2001. That year, another bank, Standard Federal Bank, bought Michigan National Bank.
At the request of Standard Federal, the old neon 'Michigan National' sign was taken down. For four and a half years, the tower had no name. Then, in 2005, the Boji family renamed it the Boji Tower. The Boji family, a father and son team, had owned the tower since 1998.
The tower has been expanded once. This happened between 1965 and 1967. An 11-story building was added right next to the front of the tower. Since 1998, the Boji Group has made many smaller updates to the building. In November 2007, the building's original antenna for WITL-FM was replaced. A new antenna for WJZL was put in place using a helicopter.
Design and Features
The Boji Tower is 23 stories tall and about 297 feet (90.5 meters) high. It is made of brick and limestone. The tower has a tall, narrow shape with a spire and a light at the top. This design is typical of American skyscrapers from the Art Deco time period.
Inside, the main passenger elevators have four special engraved panels. These panels show pictures related to hard work and industry. The outside of the tower uses 654,000 bricks. These bricks come in 17 different colors, making the building very colorful.
Today, the building is used by many different groups. It has offices, shops, and government tenants. The large, two-story area that used to be the main banking lobby is now used by the Michigan Senate. They hold their main hearings there. The sculptures on the building, including those on the doors, were made by an artist named Ulysses Ricci.
