Boldo (scientific name: Peumus boldus) is a special kind of tree. It grows naturally in the central part of Chile, a country in South America. This tree is the only species in its group, called the Peumus genus.
Boldo trees are a very important part of the unique sclerophyllous forests found in central Chile. These forests have plants with tough, leathery leaves that help them survive dry weather. Boldo has also been planted in Europe and North Africa, but you usually only see it in special botanical gardens there.
What Boldo is Used For
The leaves of the Boldo tree are used in cooking, especially in countries in Latin America. They have a strong, woody taste that is a little bit bitter. They also smell a bit like camphor, which is a strong, fresh scent.
In the Kitchen
People use Boldo leaves in a way that's similar to how bay leaves are used in cooking. They add a unique flavor to dishes.
As a Herbal Tea
Boldo leaves are also very popular for making herbal tea. Many people drink Boldo tea for its traditional uses.
