Boll Weevil was a chain of casual restaurants that served hamburgers. These restaurants were mostly found in San Diego, California, in the United States.
History of Boll Weevil
Boll Weevil was started in 1966 by Fred and Lorraine Halleman. The very first Boll Weevil restaurant was right next to a fancy steakhouse called Cotton Patch. The name "Boll Weevil" was chosen because it sounded like a smaller place that grew out of a "cotton patch."
Where it all began
Both the Boll Weevil and Cotton Patch restaurants were located in San Diego. They were on Midway Drive, close to Barnett Avenue and Pacific Highway in an area called Point Loma. At the first Boll Weevil, they used extra beef from the Cotton Patch steakhouse to make their burgers. This helped make sure no food went to waste.
Growth and changes
The Boll Weevil restaurants became very popular. Because of their success, the Cotton Patch steakhouse eventually closed down. Fred Halleman, one of the founders, helped open about 20 Boll Weevil restaurants across the country.
However, on September 15, 2008, the company that owned most of the Boll Weevil restaurants closed them down. This happened because the main company went out of business. Even though the main company closed, a few Boll Weevil restaurants that were owned by independent people (called franchises) stayed open.
As of July 2017, the website for these independent locations showed that five stores were still serving customers.
Restaurant Style and Fun
Boll Weevil restaurants had a special look. They were decorated to remind people of the American Old West, like a cowboy movie! Inside, you could also find fun things to do. Many locations had pool tables where you could play games. They also had video games for entertainment, making them a fun place for families and friends to eat.
