Bolt Wood facts for kids
Bolt Wood is a special woodland area found in Leicestershire, England. It's located near the western edge of a village called Stockerston. People believe that this woodland might be part of the forests mentioned in the ancient Domesday Book. This book was like a big survey of England made almost 1,000 years ago!
Bolt Wood was also once part of a much larger royal forest known as Leighfield Forest. The very first time Bolt Wood was written about was in an old document called a charter. This document probably dates back to before the time of King Henry VI, who ruled between 1422 and 1461. In that old paper, it was called 'Boutewood'.
A Special Place for Nature
Bolt Wood is part of an important area known as the Eye Brook Valley Woods. This whole area is officially called a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). An SSSI is a protected place because it has very important plants, animals, or geological features.
The Eye Brook Valley Woods are special because they are some of the best examples of ash-elm and ash-maple woodlands in all of Leicestershire. This means they have a lot of ash trees, along with elm and field maple trees. These woods are also famous for their wide variety of plants and the many different kinds of birds that choose to nest and raise their families there. Bolt Wood itself is known for its beautiful ash and field maple trees.
