The Bombycidae are a family of moths. They are often called silkmoths because the most famous member of this family is the Bombyx mori, also known as the silkworm. This special moth is originally from northern China. Humans have been raising silkworms for thousands of years to get their valuable silk.
This moth family includes 21 different groups, called genera, and about 150 different species. Most of these species belong to the main group called Bombycinae.

What are Silkmoths?
Silkmoths are a group of moths known for their caterpillars, which often spin cocoons made of silk. While many moths make silk, the silkworm moth is unique because its silk is used by people. These moths are usually medium to large in size. They have furry bodies and broad wings.
The Famous Silkworm
The Bombyx mori is the most well-known silkmoth. Its caterpillar is the silkworm. This insect is incredibly important to humans. It is the main source of natural silk. Unlike many other insects, the silkworm moth has been domesticated. This means it has been raised by humans for so long that it can no longer survive on its own in the wild.
Why are Silkworms Special?
Silkworms are special because of their silk. The caterpillars eat a lot of mulberry leaves. When they are ready to change into moths, they spin a cocoon around themselves. This cocoon is made of a single, long strand of silk. People carefully unwind these strands to make silk fabric.
Where Do Silkmoths Live?
Most species of Bombycidae live in tropical and subtropical regions. You can find them in places like Asia, Africa, and parts of North America. The famous silkworm, Bombyx mori, originally came from northern China. However, because it has been raised by humans for so long, it is now found in many countries around the world where silk is produced.
How Many Species Are There?
The Bombycidae family has about 150 known species. These species are grouped into 21 different genera. Scientists are always learning more about insects, so these numbers can sometimes change as new discoveries are made. Each species has its own unique features, but they all share common traits as silkmoths.
