History of Bonduel

How Bonduel Got Its Name

When the community first started, it didn't have an official name. Some early reports called it "Hartland Corners." This name came from the nearby town of Hartland.

The name Bonduel was chosen in 1864. This happened when people applied to open a post office. The name "Hartland" couldn't be used because another village in Wisconsin already had it.

So, the village was named Bonduel. It honors a Jesuit missionary named Rev. Florimond Bonduel. He worked with churches in Wisconsin. He also helped the Menominee Indians settle on their new reservation in 1853.

Becoming a Village

Bonduel officially became a village in 1916. Before this, the nearby town of Hartland managed its affairs. Becoming a village meant Bonduel could manage its own local government.
