History of Bone Gap
Long ago, before European settlers arrived, the Piankeshaw Indians had a village. It was located near where Bone Gap is today. This village was in a natural opening in the trees.
When the first European settlers came in 1830, they found many animal bones. These bones were left behind by the Piankeshaw people. Because of this, the settlers named their new home "Bone Gap."
Early settlers included families with surnames like Rude, Morgan, and Leach. Many of these families came from states in the northeastern U.S. The community they built became known as "Yankeetown." This older area, now called "Old Bone Gap," was just east of the current village. It had a store, a post office, and a doctor's office. There was also a blacksmith shop and churches. The current village of Bone Gap officially became a village on March 29, 1892.
