How Bonlee Got Its Name
The community we know as Bonlee today has had a few different names over the years! It was first established in 1894 and was called Dunlap Mills.
Just four years later, in 1898, the name changed to Causey. This new name was chosen to honor a local person named Joshua Causey.
Finally, in 1913, the community received its current name, Bonlee. This name has stuck ever since!
Becoming and Un-becoming a Town
In 1913, the same year it was named Bonlee, the community officially became an incorporated town. This meant it had its own local government and could make its own rules. However, this didn't last forever. In 1936, Bonlee's incorporation was ended, and it went back to being an unincorporated community.
Historical Landmarks
Even though Bonlee is a small community, it's close to some important historical places. For example, the Mount Vernon Springs Historic District is nearby.
