Bonnie Helen Litwiller (born February 14, 1937, died January 27, 2012) was an American expert in teaching mathematics. She wrote textbooks and taught math at the University of Northern Iowa. She helped many students learn to love numbers!

Who Was Bonnie Litwiller?

Bonnie Litwiller was born in Morton, Illinois, on February 14, 1937. She loved learning about math and how to teach it. She went to Illinois State University and earned two degrees in 1959 and 1960. Later, she earned two more degrees from Indiana University, including her doctorate in 1968. For her final project, she wrote about how to make future teachers feel better about math.

Her Career in Education

Before becoming a professor, Bonnie Litwiller taught high school for seven years in Peoria, Illinois. After that, she joined the University of Northern Iowa. She spent the rest of her career there. She taught many of the math teachers in Iowa. From 1978 to 1979, she was the president of the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This group helps math teachers in Iowa.

She retired in 2000 and moved back to Morton. Even after retiring, she kept writing about math education. She published over 1,000 articles and books! Bonnie Litwiller passed away on January 27, 2012.

Awards and Honors

Bonnie Litwiller received special awards for her work.

  • In 2003, the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics gave her their Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors someone for their amazing work over many years.
  • In 2004, the Indiana University School of Education gave her their Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is for former students who have done great things.

There are also scholarships named after her. These scholarships help students who want to study math education. One scholarship is at Illinois State University. Another scholarship is at the University of Northern Iowa. It was created with money from Bonnie Litwiller's estate.
