Booing: Showing Dislike
When an Audience boos, they are telling the performers or speakers that they are unhappy with what they saw or heard. It's a strong way to show disapproval.
Booing in the Past
Booing and hissing used to be very common, especially at the opera. In the early days of opera, from the 1600s to the early 1800s, audiences often behaved quite loudly. They would go to the opera to chat with friends, cheer for their favorite singers, and boo the ones they didn't like. They weren't always there to listen quietly to the music.
Booing Today
In many Western cultures, booing has become less common because people now think it's rude. Today, if an audience doesn't like a performance, they are more likely to simply not clap. Sometimes, people might clap very slowly, which is called "slow hand-clapping." This is a way of showing sarcastic applause, meaning they are clapping but actually showing they are unhappy.
However, booing is still quite common at sports events. Fans often boo opposing teams, referees, or even their own team if they are playing badly.
