Booubyjan is located about 250 kilometers (155 miles) northwest of Brisbane. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland.
A Look at Booubyjan's History
Booubyjan was started a long time ago, in the early 1800s. Two brothers, Clement and Paul Lawless, were among the first to settle here.
What Does the Name "Booubyjan" Mean?
The name Booubyjan is thought to come from an Aboriginal word. It likely comes from the Waka language group. The word probably means turn back. This name was first used for a large area of land where animals grazed.
Early Land Settlement
In 1877, new land in Booubyjan became available for people to choose and settle on. About 63 square miles of land were opened up for selection.
Booubyjan School
Booubyjan used to have its own school. Booubyjan State School opened its doors on October 15, 1934. However, it closed down many years later, on December 11, 1987.
