Border City, New York facts for kids
Border City is a small community, also called a hamlet, located in New York. It sits right on the edge of two counties: Ontario County and Seneca County. You can find it close to a beautiful body of water called Seneca Lake.
A Look Back in Time
Border City has a long history, dating back to 1788. This was when an important line, called the Pre-Emption Line, was drawn. This line stretched all the way from the border of Pennsylvania up to Lake Ontario. Drawing this line helped create what we now call Upstate New York.
What Does "Border" Mean?
The "Border" in Border City refers to an old boundary. This was the former border between the states of Massachusetts and New York. A big land deal happened when a group called Phelps & Gorham bought over 6 million acres from Massachusetts. This purchase helped shape the State of New York as we know it today.
Where is Border City?
Border City is located just east of the City of Geneva. It sits at an elevation of about 463 feet (141 meters) above sea level. The main roads that cross through the hamlet are East North Street (also known as County Road 4), Border City Road (County Road 110), and Pre-Emption Street. Larger roads, U.S. Route 20 and N.Y. Route 5, pass just south of Border City. Locals often call these "Route 5 and 20."
