Borg (Star Trek) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Borg are a scary group of fictional beings from the TV shows and movies of Star Trek. They are a race of cyborgs, which means they are part living creature and part machine. The Borg want to make everyone else like them. They do this by "assimilating" others, like humans or Vulcans, into their huge group mind.

Who Are the Borg?

The Borg are not just one person; they are a "collective." This means they all share the same thoughts and ideas. Imagine if everyone in your class could read each other's minds and act as one big team! That's a bit like the Borg. They don't have individual names or feelings. Their goal is to become "perfect" by adding the knowledge and technology of other species to their own.

What is Assimilation?

When the Borg meet new species, they try to "assimilate" them. This is how they grow their collective. They use tiny machines called nanoprobes. These nanoprobes change a living being into a cyborg. Once assimilated, the new Borg drone becomes part of the collective mind. They lose their own thoughts and memories. The Borg believe this is a way to improve all life.

The Borg Queen

While the Borg collective acts as one, there is a special leader called the Borg Queen. She is like the brain of the collective. Her role is similar to a queen bee in a bee hive. She gives direction and purpose to the Borg. She can also communicate directly with individual Borg drones. The Queen helps the Borg make big decisions and plan their attacks.

The Borg in Star Trek

The Borg are one of the most famous and feared enemies in the Star Trek universe. They are known for their powerful ships, called "cubes," and their relentless pursuit of perfection. They have challenged the heroes of Star Trek many times. Their goal to assimilate everyone makes them a constant threat. They show how scary it can be when individuality is lost.
