Exploring Borgnone's Past
Borgnone was first mentioned in old records way back in 1364. Back then, it was known as Brugnono. During the Middle Ages, Borgnone was part of the bigger Locarno region.
Becoming an Independent Village
In the 1400s, Borgnone became a Degagna. This was a special local area. From the 1500s to 1798, it was part of the bailiwick of Locarno. A bailiwick was like a territory ruled by a special official. Borgnone then became its own independent political municipality in 1838. This happened when the larger Centovalli area was divided.
Church and Community Life
Borgnone used to belong to the main church area of Palagnedra. In 1630, it became a "vice-parish." This meant it had its own church but was still connected to the main parish. The Church of Beata Vergine dell 'Assunta was built between 1364 and 1365. It has been changed and updated many times over the years.
Life and Changes in Borgnone
For a long time, people in Borgnone earned money from farming and raising animals. Many also had to leave the village for parts of the year to find work. This was called "seasonal emigration." By 1990, most people (about 70%) worked in the "services sector." This means jobs like tourism, shops, or other helpful services. About half of all homes in Borgnone are now vacation homes. In 1923, a railway line connecting Locarno and Domodossola was finished. This made travel much easier for the village.
Joining Centovalli
On October 25, 2009, Borgnone joined with two other former municipalities. These were Intragna and Palagnedra. Together, they formed the new, larger municipality of Centovalli.
Where is Borgnone Located?
