Scientific classification

Boronia corynophylla is a special plant that belongs to the citrus family, called Rutaceae. It only grows in a small part of Western Australia, in the south-west. This plant is a bushy shrub with thin, simple leaves. Its leaves are shaped like cylinders or narrow clubs. It has pretty pale red flowers with four petals. These flowers grow in small groups of up to three at the ends of its branches.

What Does Boronia corynophylla Look Like?

Boronia corynophylla is a shrub that spreads out and has many branches. It usually grows to about 30 cm (10 in) tall. Its branches are covered with soft, tiny hairs.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of this plant are thin and simple. They are shaped like narrow cylinders or clubs. Each leaf is about 7–10 mm (0.3–0.4 in) long and 1 mm (0.04 in) wide.

The flowers are a pale red color. They grow either alone or in small groups of up to three at the end of the stems. Each flower sits on a tiny stalk called a pedicel, which is about 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 in) long. At the bottom of each flower stalk, there are two very small leaf-like parts called bracteoles.

Flower Parts

Each flower has four sepals. Sepals are like small leaves that protect the flower bud. These sepals are egg-shaped and a dark reddish-brown color. They are about 2.5–3 mm (0.098–0.12 in) long and have tiny hairs and many small bumps called glands.

The four petals are also egg-shaped and feel a bit leathery. They are about 5 mm (0.2 in) long. The bottom parts of the petals overlap each other. Inside the flower, there are eight stamens. Stamens are the parts that produce pollen. These stamens are shaped like clubs. The ones closer to the sepals are a little longer than the ones closer to the petals.

How Was Boronia corynophylla Named?

The plant Boronia corynophylla was officially described in 1998. This was done by a scientist named Paul G. Wilson. He published his description in a science journal called Nuytsia. The first plant used for this description was found in the Frank Hann National Park.

Meaning of the Name

The second part of its scientific name, corynophylla, comes from two Ancient Greek words.

  • koryne means "club" or "mace".
  • phyllon means "leaf".

So, corynophylla means "club-shaped leaf". This name describes the unique shape of the plant's leaves.

Where Does Boronia corynophylla Live?

This special boronia plant is only found in one place: the Frank Hann National Park. This park is located in Western Australia. It grows in woodlands where a type of tree called Eucalyptus salmonophloia is common.

Is Boronia corynophylla Protected?

The Government of Western Australia's Department of Parks and Wildlife keeps track of plants like Boronia corynophylla. They have classified it as "Priority Two".

What Does "Priority Two" Mean?

Being "Priority Two" means that scientists don't know a lot about this plant yet. It has only been found in a few places. However, it is not currently in immediate danger of disappearing. This classification helps make sure the plant is watched over and protected.
