Bottnaryd Church (which is Bottnaryds kyrka in Swedish) is a very old church building in Bottnaryd, Sweden. It is found in Jönköping Municipality, which is part of Jönköping County, Sweden. The church sits right next to a lake called Gårdsjön.

About Bottnaryd Church

Bottnaryd Church is part of the Norra Mo Parish. This parish belongs to the Diocese of Skara within the Church of Sweden. The church is special because it is built entirely from wood.

When Was the Church Built?

The current church was built a long time ago, in the late 1600s. It replaced an even older church from the Middle Ages. That older church was taken down in May 1666. The new wooden church was finished in May 1695.

The Bell Tower

Next to the church, on its south side, there is a wooden bell tower. This tower was built even before the main church, in 1686. It holds the church bells.

Inside the Church

Bottnaryd Church has some very old and interesting items inside.

  • There is a special stone bowl called a baptismal font. It was used for baptisms and dates back to the Middle Ages.
  • The altarpiece is a beautiful piece of art behind the altar. It was made in northern Germany in the early 1600s.
  • You can also see a pulpit, which is a raised stand where the priest speaks. This pulpit is made of wood and has a fancy top called a canopy. It was carved in 1670.

Changes Over Time

The church has been updated over the years. Between 1886 and 1890, the church had a big renovation. This work was guided by a famous architect named Helgo Zettervall. He lived from 1831 to 1907.
