The Bottum Farm is a really old and special farm located at 1423 North Street in New Haven, Vermont. Its story goes all the way back to the early 1770s! This makes it one of the oldest farms in the area.

The farm is also important because of its connection to Justus Sherwood. He was a big figure in Vermont during the American Revolution. Today, the farm has buildings from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. Because of its history, the Bottum Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

What Does Bottum Farm Look Like?

The Bottum Farm is in a quiet, countryside part of northern New Haven. It covers about 50 acres (that's like 38 football fields!). The farm is bordered by North Street on one side and Quarry Road on another.

The main farm buildings are located on the west side of North Street. These include the main house, a dairy barn, a carriage barn, a garage, a smithy (where a blacksmith would work), and a granary (for storing grain).

The Farmhouse Style

The main house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It's built in a style called Greek Revival. This means it looks a bit like the ancient Greek temples, with strong, simple lines.

The house has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboards. The corners of the house have flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. The doorways are also framed by pilasters. Inside, even though some parts have changed over time, many original Greek Revival details are still there. Many of the windows are also original, with old-fashioned storm windows.

The Farm's Amazing History

The land where Bottum Farm stands was first bought by Justus Sherwood in 1774. He bought it from a company owned by Ira Allen and Ethan Allen. These were famous brothers who helped found Vermont.

Justus Sherwood and the Revolution

Justus Sherwood was a Loyalist during the American Revolution. This means he supported the British King, not the American colonists who wanted independence. To stop his land from being taken by the new American government, he gave the farm to his wife's family, the Bottums. This happened after he joined the British Army.

Even though Sherwood only lived on the farm for about two years, he was very important in setting up the town of New Haven. He also played a big role in how the British fought the war from Quebec. The lands in New Haven were the only ones he owned that the state didn't take away. The Bottum family continued to farm this land for a very long time, until 1958.
